The constellation behind this stele
Phoenix
A Southern Hemisphere constellation. Not visible from Central Europe; best observed from Australia, South Africa and South America during the southern summer. Its principal star Ankaa is an orange giant about 80 light-years away.
Introduced around 1598 by the Dutch navigators Pieter Dirkszoon Keyser and Frederick de Houtman, and first published in Johann Bayer's star atlas Uranometria in 1603.
